The next time you are in Soho stop by The New York Earth Room at 141 Wooster St between Prince and Houston. The Earth Room is an art installation by Walter De Maria made from 250 cubic meters of moist dirt. The exhibit has been occupying the 3,500 square foot 2nd floor since 1977. From a real estate point of view it seems mind-boggling that such a valuable space has been filled with dirt for 3 1/2 decades. Rents for upper-floor on Wooster Street command around $40 per square foot, which means this space would rent for approximately $11,000 per month. But who cares, there is something very intriguing about a big room full of dirt.
