If you are planning a trip to NYC and would like to stay in a
complete dump legendary rock and roll hotel, I have bad news for you. Hotel Chelsea recently sold (for over $80 million) and will be closed for renovations for the foreseeable future.
The landmarked building, once the tallest in New York City, opened in 1884 as a co-op. Over the years it has been home to a wide variety of musicians, artists, average joes, photographers and budget-conscious tourists. Any punk rocker worth their salt can tell you that Nancy Spungen, Sid Vicious’ girlfriend, was murdered there in 1978. However, I am unable to utter “Chelsea Hotel” without thinking of Leonard Cohen.
